Fofi Gennimata, Born in Athens in 1964, daughter of politician Georgios Genimatas, long-serving widely recognized government minister and Kakia Vergou, founding member of the Women’s Union of Greece an prominent figure of the fight for women’s rights in Greece. 

Fofi Genimata is a graduate of the Public Administration Department of the University of Athens Law School (1987). She has worked as a bank officer at the National Bank of Greece. 

She is married to the dentist Andreas Tsounis and has three children.

In 1996, after the sudden death of her father, she took over as president of the “Georgios Genimatas Association” devoted to his memory and political heritage. 

In 2000 she was first elected MP for the Athens A electoral prefecture and one year later she was elected member of the PASOK Central Committee and Secretary of the Education Sector of the party.

In October 2002 she was elected Super-Prefect for Athens and Piraeus, the then largest Local Government Unit in Greece being re-elected in 2006. In 2003 she took over as President of the Prefectures Union of Greece working for the deep reform and strengthening of Local Government and de-centralisation.

In 2009 she was appointed as Vice Minister of Health and Social Solidarity. From 2010 to 2011 she held the office of the Alternate Minister of Education and Lifelong Learning, while in 2011-2012 she served as Alternate Minister of the Interior.

In March 2012 PASOK inaugurated her as Press Representative. From June 2013 until January 2015 she served as Alternate Minister of National Defense. 

In January 2015 she was elected MP for the Athens B electoral prefecture, being re-elected in September 2015. 

She holds the office of the President of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), having been elected with a significant majority on 14th June 2015. Following her election she took the initiative to form the Democratic Coalition together with other parties of the democratic left and social democracy. Since September 2015 she is the Head of the Democratic Coalition and President of its Parliamentary Group. 

Following the primary elections held in November 2017, she was elected Leader of the new Centre-Left political body in Greece uniting movements and parties from the wider spectrum of social democracy, democratic left and political liberalism.
